Sultan Qaboos bin Said of Oman Meets with Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing

On the evening of September 11, 2004, Sultan and Prime Minister Qaboos bin Said of Oman met cordially with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing.

Qaboos said that despite the long geographical distance between Oman and China, the people of the two countries have enjoyed long-standing friendship. The political and economic relations between Oman and China have always been in good shape and the two countries have coordinated with each other well in international as well as regional affairs. The two sides should build on the traditional friendship to bring their cooperation in various fields even closer. He has instructed related departments of the Omanese government to work towards that end.

Qaboos also reaffirmed that to adhere to the one-China stance is the set policy of the government of Oman.

Li indicated that the Chinese people value the traditional friendship with the people of Oman. With the attention rendered by leaders of the two countries and the joint efforts of the two governments, friendship between China and Oman has been strengthening, with the two countries showing mutual understanding and support for each other in international affairs. China is grateful to the Omanese government for its adherence to the one-China policy and its support for China's lofty cause of national reunification. To enhance China-Oman relations conforms to the common interests of both peoples and the friendly cooperation between the two countries boasts broad prospects.

Chinese Ambassador in Oman Deng Shaoqin attended the meeting.

Li Zhaoxing arrived in Muscat in the afternoon of the same day. Omanese Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs Alawi met him at the airport and held a welcome banquet for him and his delegation in the evening. Some ministers of the Omanese government and diplomatic envoys of some countries stationed in Oman attended the banquet.
