Li Zhaoxing Holds Talks with Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs of Oman Alawi

On September 12, 2004, Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing, who is on a visit to Oman, held talks with Minister Responsible for Foreign Affairs of Oman Alawi in Muscat.

Li made positive remarks on China-Oman relations, indicating that to enhance the bilateral cooperation is in line with the interests of the two peoples and conducive to promoting development of China's relations with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the League of Arab States (LAS). China is thankful to the government of Oman for its precious support for China on issues of Taiwan and human rights. The Chinese government stands ready to make joint efforts with Oman to carry the consensus reached by leaders of the two countries to strengthen cooperation in the fields of politics, economy, energy resources, culture and tourism.

Alawi said that the famous sailboat named "Suhar" that sailed between China and Oman in the 6th century is a symbol of the traditional friendship between the two countries. The government of Oman would like to actively develop relations with China, have more exchanges of top-level visits and upgrade the level of economic and trade cooperation between the two sides. He reiterated that the Omanese government would continue adhering to the one-China policy.

The two sides also exchanged views on the Iraqi issue, the situation in the Middle East and the issue of Darfur in Sudan.

On the same day, Li Zhaoxing also met with Omanese Minister of National Economy Makki. Li said that China and Oman share great economic complementarity and boast broad prospects of economic cooperation. The Chinese government encourages enterprises to engage in cooperation in Oman and also welcomes Omanese businesses to invest in China. Makki responded that Chinese businesses in Oman are very strong and enjoy good reputation. Oman welcomes more strong Chinese enterprises to take an active part in Oman's economic development.
